Five years ago I entered on to the London dating scene not realising that it was going to bring up some painful memories. My friend Sophie was in desperate need of some loving, she had just come out of a long term relationship that unfortunately ended in tears and sorrow. Ever since then she had indulged in one brief encounter after the other,.
Her endless begging began to wear me out and eventually I agreed to double date with her. Double dates on the London dating scene were quite normal. It ensured that the woman was safe. They could also size up each others dates and give an honest opinion, more often then not this happened whilst giggling intensively in the toilets.
On this one particular night we had agreed to meet two male friends, apparently they were friends of a friend of a friend!. I never thought it would be a night when I wished I had stayed at home. I treated it as another one of Sophie's wild expeditions into the London dating scene that would be boring and tedious. Walking into the restaurant and seeing my first love sitting there shook me sideways. We had dated all through out school and college, he was still handsome but now had that mature look on his face. He had grown into a sophisticated man who made his presence known as soon as he walked into a room. He rose from his chair and gave me a hug, whilst making loud comments about long time no see. He seemed to have forgotten that the last time we saw each other he had been in the arms of another woman.
The night was very tense to say the least, painful conversation and long silences made it drag on even longer. Sophie was very curious about my quiet nature. She never knew us at college, I had only met her five years ago through work.
It was obvious to see that he was still the womanizing Romeo that he had always been. When a conversation did take place, his eyes nine times out of ten were on my chest. Hints were dropped about an after hours party at his place. Did he think I was that stupid?. Sophie understood why I had to leave the restaurant early. She knew the heart ache and pain that men can bring to your life. I also made a decision that night, that the london dating scene was simply not for me.
